Transformers

Transformers are one of the major uses of coils. They are made of two or more separate coils of wire wrapped around a common core, normally made of laminated iron sheets. Like so...

inside a transformer

The current flowing through one coil creates a magnetic field which induces a current in the other coil, this however will only work with AC and not DC. So how can this be used to transform voltage or current? The ratio of turns in one coil compared to the other changes the current and voltage in the other.

  • 1:1 - If you have the same amount of loops in both coils the the same voltage and current is passed along.
  • 1:2 - If you have twice the amount of loops in the output coils then the voltage is doubled and current halved. 48 volt 2 amps (96 watts) goes to 96 volt 1 amp (96 watts). 1:5 is 5 times the voltage and 1/5 of the current. etc
  • 2:1 - If you have half the amount of loops in the output coils then the voltage is halved and current doubled. 48 volt 2 amps (96 watts) goes to 24 volt 4 amps (96 watts). 5:1 is 1/5 of the voltage and 5 times the current. etc

Transformers are used to change AC voltage higher or lower.

What are transformers used for and their purposes?

Do transformers consume power even when the output current is not used. Eg, when the output leads of the transformer are not connected to anything, is the input still using power?
