How to De-solder
You'll need two things:
- Soldering iron - 15-30 watt for sensitive jobs, You don't want them too hot or they may damage the components.
- Device to Remove Solder - Either a vacuum pump or a solder wick. A Vacuum pump will look like a syringe that will suck up solder and is a better option if you plan to do lots of de-soldering. The wick, is many thin strands of copper that absorb the solder like a sponge and is single use, so it can get expensive if you use lots of it. The wick will tend to remove more solder though, so you might want to use both, vacuum pump most of it off and clean up with the wick.
Firstly, give the surface a clean of dirt, grease or any other covering, then....
For the vacuum pump
Once your soldering iron is hot place the tip of it so it is in contact with both of the surfaces the solder is joining together (most commonly the board and the component but it may be two wire etc). After a second or two the solder should melt into a liquid state. Push the plunger down so it locks in place. Place the tip into the liquid solder and press the button. The plunger will pop up, creating a vacuum in the chamber. The vacuum will be released via the nozzle, sucking up the solder in the process. Most of the solder should be sucked up but you might need to do this once or twice more to get all of the solder.
For the Wick
Firstly heat up the wick with the soldering iron. The place the wick against the solder and place the soldering iron in contact with the two surfaces and the wick. When the solder melts, the solder should flow up into the wick. Remove the iron and wick. The cut off the part of the wick which has absorbed the solder and if there is still more solder on your joint repeat this.
Also
- If your components are sensitive, attach a heat sink to them to prevent damage.
- Look after and clean your equipment afterwards.
- Check you components and boards afterwards to make sure you have not damaged them during removal.
